Press Release: Possible processing of residual waste from Syrian chemical weapons

The OPCW, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, has begun removing from Syria certain chemical products that can be used as chemical weapons. These products will be treated on American ships, after which the residues produced will have to be destroyed on the continent.

At the OPCW’s request, Indaver is looking into the possibility of processing a part of these by-products in its rotary kiln incinerators in Antwerp. This request has been made to various organisations and companies around the world. Indaver is carefully studying the possibility of thermally processing these by-products under safe conditions at a very high temperature of 1000 °C, thus destroying them. A thorough risk analysis forms part of this study.
Indaver processes a wide range of industrial and hazardous wastes in its rotary kiln incinerators. The flue gases always meet the strict European emission standards.
A possible offer and appropriate tender will only be submitted after coordination with the competent regional and federal governments.
