Indaver with ACCIONA win €400m energy from waste contract in Scotland

Today Indaver has signed a contract to operate an energy from waste facility for the local authorities in northeast Scotland. The NESS Energy Project in Aberdeen with a total contract value of €400 million will be capable of processing 150,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste every year to generate electricity.

Sustainable solution for non-recyclable municipal solid waste

The Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, and Moray Councils in northeast Scotland have joined together to build an energy from waste facility to process non-recyclable waste. The project will provide a long-term, sustainable solution for non-recyclable municipal solid waste produced as new legislation will ban waste going into landfill in Scotland from 2021.

Strong partnership for construction and operation of the facility

Indaver with Acciona have been awarded the Aberdeen NESS energy from waste project. The leading partner, ACCIONA, a global company focused on sustainable infrastructure and renewable energy, will deliver the construction of the facility within the three year build period. The operation and maintenance of the facility will be in the hands of Indaver for a 20 year contract term.
For the operation and maintenance of the facilities for the entire duration of the contract, the authorities will rely on the expertise of Indaver, a company specialized in waste management for over 30 years.

‘The NESS project is an excellent example of the circular economy by providing Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray with a sustainable and energy efficient way to treating non-recyclable waste. With NESS we will recover as many materials and as much energy as possible from the waste streams we treat, thus creating value from the waste’ says Indaver CEO Paul De Bruycker.

Energy production and job opportunities

The facility will be built by ACCIONA and Indaver has been awarded the operation of the energy from waste facility for 20 years. The facility will be housed in a former gas storage site on the East Tullos Industrial Estate in Aberdeen, where it will treat non-recyclable waste in a clean, sustainable and comprehensive way. It will also generate electricity for the National Grid and potentially heating for households in the Torry district. The new facility will offer full time job opportunities for appr 40 employees. It is anticipated that the facility will be accepting waste for commissioning by January 2022 and fully operational by August 2022.

Long term experience in Energy from Waste

The Indaver operated plant will comply with Scotland’s Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations and will be regulated by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), whose regulations are based on the strictest controls recently introduced by European directives. Indaver successfully operates EfW plants throughout Europe and has operated in the UK for over ten years. Indavers ethos of sustainability derives from its local authority origins in Flanders, Belgium, where long term sustainable waste management is key.
